Swiss Village’s Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion Shuffleboard Ribbon Cutting
A crowd of about 70-75 gathered on Friday, June 5th, 2015 at 12:30pm for the inauguration of the latest addition to the Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion. The Pavilion, an outreach/service of Swiss Village, Inc, celebrated the opening day of the shuffleboard courts, a free activity for the community. Tony Yoder, chair of the shuffleboard committee, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We want to express our appreciation to well over 70 individuals and businesses who gave cash donations, time and material for this project to happen,” said Yoder.
Yoder said the idea originated with Miz Lehman, who wanted the community of Berne to enjoy the fun of playing the game much like he had experienced in Florida. Yoder and Lehman decided to meet with Daryl Martin, previous Executive Director of Swiss Village, about the proposition of having a shuffleboard court next to the Muselman Wellness Pavilion. Martin met with the Swiss Village Board and they approved the land adjacent to the Muselman Wellness Pavilion for this use, if the money could be raised.
Yoder said, “I want to give Miz Lehman 100% of the credit for the result you see today of this beautiful facility. He literally took it upon himself to go out and contact people to raise over $70,000 for this project.” After the ribbon-cutting, Miz Lehman pushed the opening disc on the shuffleboard courts. Four professional shuffleboard players from Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana followed suit, and soon all four courts were in use. Instruction on the game was incorporated throughout the day.
The shuffleboard courts are for enjoyment of the community and are free to use. Rules of the courts are: 1) You must go into the Muselman Wellness Pavilion to sign out the key for the equipment shed. 2) Anyone under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. 3) No walking on the courts. 4) Must wear close-toed shoes. 5) Only water can be brought into the courts. 6) You must put equipment away in the proper place you found it.
Yoder praised the community and Swiss Village, Inc for their participation and collaboration in making this family-friendly game possible for Berne, Indiana to enjoy.
