Physical therapy is designed to restore muscular strength and control, which may have been lost due to an illness or injury. Treatment may include gait training, joint mobilization and strengthening exercises. The therapist focuses on improving and restoring mobility, strength, flexibility and coordination. Depending on the diagnosis, therapy may include passive movement and patterning for neurological training to prevent stiffness and re-educate the neuro-network between the brain and muscles.
Occupational therapy provides the necessary training to restore independence and self-care. The focus is relearning the daily tasks of living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, housekeeping, cooking, and other skills needed to return to your home. Therapists work closely with patients to train them to use the specialized equipment for mobility and independence.
Speech therapy provides services to those who have a language disorder such as impaired expression, comprehension, sound production and articulation or those who have difficulty swallowing. The inability to communicate is very frustrating. Persons suffering from aphasia, apraxia, dysphagia and other speech impairments can frequently benefit from speech therapy. For the most effective results, early and aggressive therapy is important.
